    Inclusion & Belonging

    Inclusion & Belonging at Monki

Here at Monki, we strive for diversity, equity and inclusion to be at the core of everything we do. Together, we actively work on creating a safe place for everyone to feel comfortable in expressing their ideas, their opinions, and to be their true selves: We believe you should never apologise for being yourself. We want everyone to feel empowered and encouraged to be themselves. Read on to learn about some of the things we do to ensure an inclusive workplace.

    Our people

Team Monki is at the heart of our brand. We value everyone’s unique differences. Encouraging curiosity we promote listening, learning and teaching across the team. Team Monki is about all the amazing individuals that are even stronger when they come together.

Here are a few of the actions we have implemented to support this:

    ERGs (Employee Resource Groups)

In late 2021 we launched a framework supporting Employee Resource Groups here at Monki. We want to encourage inclusion, prevent discrimination, and understand the importance of representation and community in doing this. We look forward to supporting our colleagues and their communities.

    Inclusion & Diversity Council

Since 2022 we have an Inclusion & Diversity Council where people who are curious with questions and want to create change, come together to discuss and raise their voices. We all come from different perspectives, knowledge and experience. No matter what yours is, it’s all valuable. In the Council we want to understand and use these perspectives to create something amazing. The Council is somewhere to discuss and elevate topics. It’s a place we learn and teach but also discover and take action. The Council consists of 30+ colleagues from 7+ countries and we welcome more to join every 6 months.

LGBTQIA+ certification for our Head Office

In 2018 we became LGBTQIA+ certified by RFSL, the Swedish Federation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex Rights. Founded in 1950, the non-profit organization is internationally recognized, and works on projects to support LGBTQIA+ rights across the world. Employees at our Head Office invested in educational workshops in order to learn more about norms and the impact they have on working conditions and health of the LGBTQIA+ people. In addition, together with RFSL we have an ongoing action plan how to create a better more inclusive workplace for members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

    Our community and friends

Making a difference doesn’t happen overnight, and we can’t do it alone. That’s why we work with some incredible partners, collaborators and originations and together make an impact.

You can read more about all our partners and collabs here. But here are a few we work with on topics close to our heart:

    BDD Foundation

Since November 2021 we have joined the Body Dysmorphic Disorder Foundation to raise awareness around Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), a distressing psychological condition where a person becomes very preoccupied with one or more features in physical appearance. With about 1 in 5 suffering from BDD today, this condition is largely overlooked and undiagnosed. The BDD Foundation is the only charity in the world exclusively dedicated to raising awareness and alleviating the suffering caused by the condition. With a focus on information, early diagnosis and support in combating the disorder the Foundation’s work is vital. You can read more about the Foundation here.

    Polyester

Polyester is a self-published, intersectional feminist fashion and culture publication aiming to bridge the gap of URL cyberfeminism with the IRL world. We started collaborating with them in 2020 on a podcast series titled The Skin You’re In. Each episode addressed a topic central to young people today including discussions on Black Lives Matter, challenging societal beauty standards, gender inequality and much more. Featuring inspirational guests from across the globe to contribute their valued knowledge, experience and/or opinions on these topics. We later started collaborating with them on the Queer Creative Fund to give visibility to and celebrate queer creatives. Together we want to keep the conversation going on matters that we believe need to be spoken about, and then spoken about some more. You can read more about Polyester here.

    Unsterotype alliance

Unstereotype Alliance is an industry-led initiative convened by UN Women in 2017 to end the harmful gender stereotyping, often perpetuated through communications. The Alliance focuses on empowering people in their diversity (gender identity, race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, age, ability, sexuality, language, religion, education, body size, and more). It seeks to eradicate harmful stereotypes to help create an equal world. We joined at the beginning of 2021 in a three-year partnership as part of the H&M Group. You can read more about Unstereotype alliance here.

    Our actions

We know that for what we do to matter we have to keep pushing forward and go that extra mile. Here are a few other actions we take to try to make a difference:

    Monki presents

Monki presents are our monthly sustainability talks available for all Team Monki. We invite internal or external guests to take part in discussions or educate us in topics we are interested in. In the past we have had guests and topics including: RFSL on identity, Privilege to Progress on racism, Shon Faye, Nicole Kavander and Ione Gamble on intersectional feminism and Zalando and a colleague leading an ERG on the importance of ERGs, to name a few. We dedicate 3 months a year to topics around inclusion & diversity.

    Trainings

Knowledge is key. We love to learn and have several trainings here at Monki which touch upon important topics like unconscious bias, psychological safety and feedback culture. There are always more trainings being developed for continuous learning.

We look forward to sharing more of our ongoing actions in the future.
