Wear. Love. Recycle
A collection designed for circularity.
This online exclusive drop has been designed to be recycled and to be put back into the fashion loop – because life moves in circles, fashion should too.
The collection features six garments with a timeless and minimalist aesthetic. Key pieces include the reversible quilted coat made from 100% recycled polyester and recycled polyester buttons. A pair of asymmetric waist jeans made from 100% organic cotton featuring screw buttons designed for disassembly and can be worn two ways.
We asked Minna Guan, Collection Manager and Alexandra Blom Lissvik, Designer to break it down for us...
What was the purpose of this collection?
The main objective for this collection was to design for circularity, longevity and recyclability. By using mono-materials and a minimalist design aesthetic we believe we ticked a lot of the boxes!
What does mono-material mean?
Mono-material means that a garment is created using a single group of fibre, for example 100% cotton. Mono-materials make it easier to recycle and re-use garments.
Is there a reason behind the white colour palette?
The idea of longevity during the design stage was important for us, which is where the neutral colour palette comes in. Not only do we want the customer to love the aesthetics of their garment for longer, but we also want to allow for the opportunity for customisation. For example, plant-based dye or DIY embroidery. And after some time, we encourage the customer to return their loved garment to the supply chain, by recycling it.
Monki’s aim is to become a fully circular brand, what role does your team play in this journey?
When it comes to circularity our role in the Buying and Design department is very critical. We really need to prioritise a circular mindset when it comes to how we design the garments, the materials we select and the processes we use. For example, for this collection not only did we use mono-materials we considered other aspects that would make the garments easier to recycle, such as using screw buttons on the jeans that are designed for disassembly.
This is just the beginning for us on our journey to become a fully circular brand, and we’re 100% committed to actively working towards reaching that goal.
