Our aim is to source only recycled or more sustainably sourced materials by 2030*
*These recycled or more sustainably sourced materials have a reduced negative environmental impact compared to conventional alternatives. We base this assessment on data sources like third-party lifecycle assessment (LCA) data and external benchmarks and assessments, like the Preferred Fiber & Material Matrix by Textile Exchange. Our material categorization supports the product teams to take better decisions, please find the framework here.
We want to help you to make an informed choice when shopping at Monki. Under the headline Additional material information on the product page, you will find information on the use of our prioritized materials. Read on to find more details about those materials.
Organic cotton is cotton grown without the use of chemical pesticides or fertilisers and contains no genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
To encourage and support more farmers to transition to organic cotton we also use cotton from farms that are in the process of converting. This is called in-conversion cotton. During the 3-year conversion period, all the practices implemented by the farmers are as per the requirements of organic certification, meaning no artificial pesticides or fertilisers and genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are used.
Recycled cotton is made from recycled cotton garments or production waste that are mechanically recycled and spun into new yarn. Recycled materials reduce the use of virgin raw materials (as well as chemicals, energy and water used to make them). There are challenges to work with high shares of recycled cotton, which is why you will most often find it in blends. Currently, all our jeans contain at least 5% recycled cotton, and we are working to increase the share.
TENCEL™ is a lyocell fibre, extracted from wood originated from certified responsibly managed forests (FSC or PEFC). It is produced in a closed-loop process where chemicals are reused.
LENZING™ ECOVERO™ Viscose
LENZING™ ECOVERO™ viscose is a branded viscose fibre, made from wood originated from certified responsibly managed forests (FSC or PEFC).
Recycled wool is wool made from textile waste in production or from end-of-life textiles. The waste is mechanically recycled and spun into new yarn.
Recycled Brass/Copper/Zinc/Sterling silver
Metals like Brass, Copper, Zinc or Sterling silver that are made from metal waste. The waste is melted and used in production of new items.
R-PETG, R-PCTG and R-PMMA
These are various kinds of plastic waste which have been recovered and processed into a material that can be reused to make new plastic products.
Polyester is a synthetic fibre made from crude oil (a fossil resource), which is used widely around the world, especially common in sportswear. Post-consumer recycled bottles are most used to produce recycled polyester today. However, our focus is on increase the use of textile-to-textile recycled polyester.
Polyamide is another popular oil-based fibre, often used to make underwear and tights, but also outerwear. The recycled polyamide comes from waste from production or in some cases old fishing net and carpets.
Elastane is an elastic synthetic fibre made from oil (a fossil resource) that is often found in products where some elasticity is needed. We get our recycled elastane from leftover waste from production.
