Our sustainable denim story

There’s a lot to say about our denim, and maybe you don’t know the whole story. So, let’s get into it.

Certified organic cotton

Our entire denim range is made with 100% certified organic cotton. And, we’ve been sourcing organic cotton since 2016.

Organic cotton is cotton grown without the use of chemical pesticides and fertilisers – and no genetically modified organisms (GMO). Also, choosing organic cotton means 46% less climate impact compared to conventional grown cotton (according to Textile Exchange report 2016). All organic cotton products have been independently certified by accredited certification bodies according to the standards OCS (Organic Content Standard) or the GOTS (The Global Organic Textile Standard).

Recycled cotton

Recycled cotton is made from recycled cotton fabrics (e.g. recycled clothes) that are mechanically recycled and spun into new yarn. Recycled cotton reduces both the water use and the climate impact by around 75% compared to virgin cotton fibres.

We have also started to blend our organic cotton with Post-Consumer Waste (PCW) recycled cotton in some denim garments.

Post-Consumer Waste is not to be confused with Pre-Consumer Waste. Pre-Consumer Waste is the warehouse waste and fabric scraps found in the factories that then can be put back into the manufacturing process. We’re talking about Post-Consumer Waste recycled cotton. The garments you’ve bought, worn, loved and then recycled. We’ve taken those recycled garments and/or materials and created a new garment. For someone else to buy, wear, love and recycle all over again. Contributing to the circular fashion loop.

By 2021, we aim to include PCW recycled cotton in all our fabrics.

"The bottom insert of our buttons and rivets saves 100% electricity, water and thermal energy. Meaning absolutely 0% environmental impact!"

Other recycled materials

Many aspects of our denim are made from recycled materials, including recycled thread and recycled zipper tapes. Some of our denim also has a little stretch which means they are made with an organic cotton blend. They include a small percentage of recycled polyester or elastane.

Recycled thread

We source our recycled thread from third-party suppliers such as Coats and A&E. The thread is GRS certified (Global Recycled Standard), 100% recycled premium polyester.

Recycled zipper tape

For all our recycled materials, we use the independent third-party certifications GRS (Global Recycle Standard) and RCS (Recycled Claim Standard). All of our zipper tapes are 100% certified recycled polyester.

Sustainable metal zippers

Our metal zippers are made from raw natural brass, we don’t alter the colour at all. Which means we use 91% less electricity and 72% less water when compared to conventional coloured metal zippers.

Eco metal buttons

Our metal buttons and rivets are made from eco-friendly raw material. The buttons and rivets come in two parts. Our top cap saves 70% electricity, 99% toxic waste and 91% thermal energy when compared to conventional options.

The bottom insert of our buttons and rivets saves 100% electricity, water and thermal energy. Meaning absolutely 0% environmental impact!

Circularity

We believe that the future of fashion is circular. Which is why we use recycled fibres in all of our denim. This means, all of the waste can be re-used. Some goes back into creating new fabrics and the rest can be recycled for industrial use.

One of our main missions with our current initiatives and upcoming projects is to contribute to the circular fashion loop. Involving our recycled materials, PCW (Post-Consumer Waste), recycling in our stores and our special collections e.g. upcycled capsule collection.

Sustainable washing

We track and evaluate our quality percentage for sustainable washing using a third-party software from Jeanologia. This technology is installed at all our suppliers.

At the moment, 98% of our denim is rated as low impact – we’re aiming for 100% by 2021!

Laser finish

The traditional way of finishing denim is hand-scraping, to give the denim a more distressed or worn look. In our finishing process, we use laser machines from Jeanologia and VAV technology. This method takes less time, space and reduces energy use.

100% Cruelty free denim

There is zero leather or animal products in our denim. We use a vegan back patch on our jeans, that is made from Jacron. Jacron is a material made of cellulosic fibres and acrylic polymers – certified by the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC).

For the future

This is just the start of our sustainable denim journey and we know we’ve got a long way to go. In order to get there, we’ve got a few things in motion.

By 2022:

  • All fabrics will have a minimum of 5% PWC (Post-Consumer Waste), with the aim to increase this percentage every season.
  • NO PP (Potassium Permanganate)– we’ve reached 100% ZDHC enrolment (Zero Discharge of Harzardous Chemicals) which means you won’t find any harmful chemicals in your clothes, but we want to ensure nothing harmful slips through the cracks at any stage of the process.
  • Low impact sustainable dye methods. Use more sustainable dye options, which reduce water usage, energy and production waste.
  • Increase use of recycled elastane in our denim.
  • Reach 100% quality percentage sustainable washing – green zone!
